1986 NGC MS-69 1 oz American Gold Eagle Coin
The American Gold Eagle is the official gold bullion coin in the USA, produced by the US Mint since the Liberty Coin Act in 1985, along with its counterpart, the American Silver Eagle.
Both coins debuted with a 1 Troy oz version, and their immediate acceptance in the bullion market made them one of the most successful coin programs in the world, with coins annually struck since their first release in 1986.
This 1986 Gold Eagle coin is the premiere strike, graded MS-69 by the NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Corporation. This is a must-have item for any coin collection.

The Design
Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ Lady Liberty design, initially featured in the 1907 20-dollar Double Eagle Coin, is the image displayed on the obverse side.
Saint-Gaudens depicts Lady Liberty walking forward, carrying a torch and an olive branch. Her march ahead symbolizes the nation’s evolution to progress, peace, and enlightenment. The words “LIBERTY” are inscribed on top, the Capitol Building is engraved on the lower left, and the coin’s mintage year is on the right, in Roman letters. Six-pointed stars encircle the image.
The reverse side displays the premiere design of the Bald Eagle. It displays a female Bald Eagle cherishing its hatchling under her wing while the male Eagle perches their nest.
The words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” arch over the image, the mottos “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST” flank the image, and the coin’s weight, metal content, and denomination are on the bottom through “1 OZ. FINE GOLD - 50 DOLLARS.”
Mintage
The debuting strike accounted for 1,362,650 units of American Gold Eagles, weighing 1.0909 troy ounces (or 33.931 grams) with a diameter of 1.287 inches (32.70 mm).
American Gold Eagle coins are essentially 22-karat gold (.9167 fineness). The US Mint includes 3% silver and 5.33% copper in the alloy, making them durable and robust.
They are guaranteed to contain one troy ounce of gold, as the silver and copper are further added on top of the pure gold content. That means this coin is slightly heavier than similar gold bullion coins in the market, such as the .9999 fine Canadian Gold Maple Leaf.
An NGC MS-69 Graded Coin
The Sheldon Scale, named after its creator, was first introduced in 1949 with a ranking scale ranging from 1 to 70 to evaluate coins according to their condition and authenticity. The higher the number the coin gets, the closer to perfection it is.
The NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company, a renowned international and independent service, appraises the coins submitted to its assessment using the Sheldon Scale.
A Mint State (MS) coin describes a coin produced for regular distribution that has never circulated. The number 69 means the coin's original luster is preserved despite almost invisible minor contact marks or flaws.
