Struck by the United States Mint between 1951 and 1954, the Booker–Carver Half Dollar is a commemorative silver coin with a short mintage.

It aims to honor two influential African American leaders: George Washington Carver (1864–1943), a pioneering agricultural scientist and educator, and Booker T. Washington (1856–1915), founder of the Tuskegee Institute, who played an essential role in promoting American values and education as a counter to the spread of Communism. 

Although its mintage was relatively short-lived, the Booker–Carver Half Dollar remains historically significant as the final commemorative coin released by the U.S. Mint before the launch of the modern commemorative coin program in 1982.

The image is surrounded by several engravings, which read: “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “GEORGE WASHINGTON CARVER,” “LIBERTY,” “BOOKER T. WASHINGTON,” “HALF DOLLAR,” and the year of mintage.

The reverse showcases an outline map of the United States engraved with the letters “U.S.A,” and surrounded by “FREEDOM AND OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL,” “AMERICANISM”. Mint marks are located beneath the map.
