The United States Mint released the Booker T. Washington Memorial Half Dollar in 1946 as an official circulating coin until 1951.

This strike honors Booker T. Washington, a pivotal figure in American history. Born into slavery in Virginia in 1856, Washington rose above difficult beginnings to become a prominent educator, author, and leader, helping expand educational access and opportunities for African Americans.

On the reverse, the design depicts the modest log cabin where Washington was born, accompanied by the phrase “FROM SLAVE CABIN TO HALL OF FAME.” Additional inscriptions include “BOOKER T. WASHINGTON BIRTHPLACE MEMORIAL,” “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “FRANKLIN COUNTY VA.”
