Introduced in 1878 as the nation’s official dollar coin for widespread use, Morgan Dollars were minted until 1904, with a brief reissue in 1921. 

The US Mint named them after their designer, Chief Engraver George T. Morgan, and struck them at multiple mint facilities, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, though Carson City ceased operations in 1893. 

Coins with the “O” mint mark were produced at the New Orleans Mint.

The Design

The obverse portrayal of Lady Liberty is enhanced by a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara engraved with “LIBERTY.” 

It includes the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance.

The reverse consists of a Bald Eagle’s depiction with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

It is also inscribed with the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and the “O” mint mark.
