The U.S. Mint began producing Morgan Dollars in 1878, featuring a design created by Chief Engraver George T. Morgan.

These coins served as the official dollar for circulation until 1904, with a brief reissue in 1921. 

They were struck at several U.S. Mint locations, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, although coin production in Carson City ended in 1893. 

Coins bearing the "O" mint mark were produced at the New Orleans Mint.

The Design

The obverse consists of Lady Liberty’s effigy enhanced by a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

It also features the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance.

On the reverse, the bald eagle has outstretched wings, arrows, olive branches in its talons, and laurels encircling it. 

Additional engravings correspond to the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and the “O” mint mark.
