George T. Morgan, a prominent engraver for the U.S. Mint, played a significant role in American coinage by designing the dollar coin that circulated from 1878 to 1904. 

Named in his honor, the Morgan Dollar featured .7734 ounces of silver and saw two further production periods. The U.S. Mint revived the Morgan Dollar in 1921 and again in 2021, releasing a commemorative edition to mark the centennial of its final original issuance.

The Design

The obverse displays Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

The image, which contains Liberty’s left-profile bust, includes the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance.

The Bald Eagle is displayed in the reverse with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. The “D” mint mark from the Denver Mint is beneath the laurel wreath.

It also features the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
