The US Mint initially produced Morgan Silver Dollars coins from 1878 to 1904, then again in 1921 as the official dollar coin for widespread circulation, and once more in a commemorative strike marking the centenary of their last issuance as circulating currency.

Their design, signed by US Mint Chief Engraver George T. Morgan, reflects the economic optimism and industrial growth of the US era. 

One notable feature of some Morgan Silver Dollars is the mintmarks, which indicate where the coin was produced. The coins minted in New Orleans bear the “O” mint mark.

The Design

The obverse consists of Lady Liberty’s portrayal wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

It is also engraved with the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

The reverse displays the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

Further engravings refer to the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR,” and the “O” mint mark from the New Orleans Mint.
