The Morgan Silver Dollar emerged during American history's transformative and hopeful era. Minted at the peak of the Gilded Age, it reflects a period of rapid industrialization, economic expansion, and urban development.

These iconic dollar coins were circulated from 1878 to 1904, with a brief return in 1921. Designed by George T. Morgan, each coin contained .7734 oz of silver and was produced at several U.S. Mint locations, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City. Notably, Carson City halted its coinage operations in 1893.

Those issued in the New Orleans Mint carry the “O” mint mark.

The Design

The obverse portrays Lady Liberty’s effigy wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

It includes the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance.

The reverse showcases the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” and the “O” mint mark from the New Orleans Mint complete the design.
