The US Mint manufactured Liberty Double Eagles for circulation in the United States from 1850 to 1907. These coins, with a face value of $20, are legal tender and contain 0.9675 ounces of gold.
The design, created by the fourth Chief Engraver of the US Mint, James B. Longacre, features a gracefully depicted Lady Liberty and Heraldic Eagle.
During their regular production, the US Mint issued these coins at several official branches, including the San Francisco Mint, which imprinted an “S” mint mark on the reverse side.

The Design
Lady Liberty’s left profile bust, adorned with a tiara engraved with “LIBERTY,” stamps the obverse. The thirteen six-pointed stars indicate the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of mintage is displayed at the bottom.
The reverse artistry showcases the Heraldic Eagle, which has spread wings, the national shield in front of its chest, arrows in its talons, and the banner “E PLURIBUS UNUM” in its beak.
It includes the engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the coin’s face value of “TWENTY DOLLARS.”
