1887 NCG MS-63 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin

Morgan Silver Dollars were the US’ official circulating dollar coin from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. The coins featured George T. Morgan’s design and were named after their designer. In 2021, a commemorative edition of Morgan Dollars celebrated the centennial of its last official coinage.

The US Mint crafted Morgan Dollars through various branches, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, until 1893, when coinage operations in this last facility ceased.

Those that do not bear mint marks, like these Morgan Dollars, are identified as minted in the Philadelphia branch.

At SD Bullion, you can find 1887 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins, sealed in NGC slabs and certified as MS-63 coins.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls, also wears a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.”

The image includes the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance.

On the reverse, the Bald Eagle’s portrayal features it with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it.

The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” accompany the image.

An NGC MS-63 Coin

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company is an internationally recognized third-party service working independently from sovereign mints to appraise and grade coins.

It uses the Sheldon Grading Scale as a parameter to rank coins from 1 to 70 according to their condition.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business circulation sample format. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines but still have an attractive overall appearance.
