1886 NGC MS-64 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin

Morgan Silver Dollars were the circulating dollar coin in the US from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921.

Known for their high silver content, these coins were designed by George T. Morgan, after whom they were named.

Morgan Dollars were produced at several US Mint locations, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, until 1893, when the Carson City branch ceased operations.

Coins without mint marks, like these Morgan Dollars, are attributed to the Philadelphia Mint.

At SD Bullion, you can find 1886 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins, sealed in NGC slabs and certified as MS-64 coins.

  • Produced by the US Mint;

  • Issued in Philadelphia but bears no mint mark;

  • Holds USD 1 denomination and legal tender status;

  • The reverse depicts the Bald Eagle.

The Design

The obverse features Lady Liberty’s effigy wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.”

It includes the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

The reverse features the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it.

The design also contains the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

An NGC MS-64 coin

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) works independently from sovereign mints, appraising and grading coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

MS stands for Mint State, referring to coins issued in the same format as a business circulation coin. 64 is the grade given to coins with average luster, noticeable, light scuff marks, or defects but with attractive overall quality.
