From 1878 to 1904, the US Mint produced Morgan Silver Dollars regularly to meet internal demand for a circulating one-dollar coin. 

The production of Morgan Dollars returned in 1921 to serve as a circulating dollar coin and once more in 2021 to celebrate the landmark of the 100th anniversary of its last official minting.

The design imprinted on these coins was created by the fourth US Mint Chief Engraver, George T. Morgan, who was inspired by America's westward expansion and industrial growth in the 19th century.

The Design

The obverse portrays Lady Liberty’s profile, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara engraved “LIBERTY.”

It is also inscribed with the words “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

The reverse displays the bald eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, olive branches in its talons, and laurels surrounding it. 

Additional engravings include the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.” 

An NGC MS-63 Coin

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale. It operates independently of sovereign mints and certifies coins from 1 to 70.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business circulation sample format. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines but still have an attractive overall appearance.
