1886 NCG MS-65 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin

Morgan Silver Dollars were the circulating dollar coins in the US from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. In addition to a high concentration of silver, the coins feature George T. Morgan’s design, hence their moniker.

In 2021, the US Mint issued a commemorative edition to celebrate the centennial of the last official strike of these coins.

Morgan Dollars were issued in various branches of the US Mint, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, until 1893, when coinage operations in this last facility ceased.

Those that do not bear mint marks, like these Morgan Dollars, are identified as minted in the Philadelphia branch.

The Design

The obverse showcases Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed with “LIBERTY.” 

It also contains the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

The reverse displays the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

The image features the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
