1885-O NGC MS-65 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin

From 1878 to 1921, Morgan Dollars were the dollar coins in circulation in the United States. Designed by George T. Morgan, the US Mint produced these coins, each containing .7734 ounces of silver.

These coins were so popular that in 2021, the US Mint released a commemorative bullion version.

The coins were minted at various branches, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, the latter of which ceased its coinage operations in 1893.

Those coins minted with the “O” mint mark were issued in the New Orleans Mint.

Today, SD Bullion offers 1885-O Morgan Silver Dollar Coins sealed in NGC slabs and certified as MS-65 coins.

The Design

The obverse, designed by George T. Morgan, features Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.”

It also has the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance.

On the reverse, the Bald Eagle has outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it.

The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” accompany the image.

An NGC MS-65 coin

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) works independently from sovereign mints, appraising and grading coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

An MS-65 coin means that the analyzed coin has the same format as a business coin that still displays high-quality luster despite its aged mintage. Minor contact marks and scatters may be noticeable, but the coin has an overall quality above the average.
