1885-O NGC MS-64 Morgan Silver Dollar 

Morgan Dollars served as circulating dollar coins in the US from 1878 to 1904, and then again in 1921. The US Mint produced them using George T. Morgan’s design and .7734 ounces of silver content. 

The coins were minted at various branches, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, which ceased coinage operations in 1893.

Those coins minted with the “O” mint mark were issued in the New Orleans Mint.

The Design

George T. Morgan designed the obverse, which shows Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance complete the image.

On the reverse, the Bald Eagle has outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

It also features the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

MS stands for Mint State, referring to coins issued in the same format as a business circulation coin. 64 is the grade given to coins with average luster, noticeable, light scuff marks, or defects but with attractive overall quality.
