1885 NGC MS-64 Silver Morgan Dollar - New York Bank Hoard | From US Treasury Bag

The US Mint produced Morgan Silver Dollars, which were the circulating dollar coins in the US from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. 

Morgan Dollars were crafted at several US Mint locations, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, until 1893, when the Carson City branch ceased operations. Coins without mint marks are attributed to the Philadelphia Mint.

During the Great Treasure Hoardings of the 1960s, several silver coins, like Morgan Dollars, were kept in the US Treasury vaults in their original bags.

The Design

The obverse depicts  Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

It also displays the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

The reverse portrays the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” are included.

An NGC MS-64 coin

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) works independently from sovereign mints, appraising and grading coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

MS stands for Mint State, referring to coins issued in the same format as a business circulation coin. 64 is the grade given to coins with average luster, noticeable, light scuff marks, or defects but with attractive overall quality.
