1885 NGC MS-63 Morgan Dollar Silver Coin

The US Mint produced Morgan Dollars from 1878 to 1904, which served as the circulating dollar coins in the US during that period.

Named after its designer, George T. Morgan, Morgan Dollars symbolize America's industrial growth and westward expansion in the 19th century. The coins' metal content accounted for .7734 ounces of silver.

The US Mint reintroduced them as circulation coins in 1921, and a special edition was issued in 2021 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the last official minting.

At SD Bullion, you can find 1885 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins, sealed in NGC slabs and certified as MS-63 coins.

  • Contains .7734 oz of silver;

  • Produced by the US Mint;

The Design

The obverse showcases Lady Liberty’s bust with a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed with “LIBERTY.”

The design includes the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance.

The reverse features the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it.

The accompanying engravings read “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

An NGC MS-63 Coin

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale. It operates independently of sovereign mints and certifies coins from 1 to 70.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business circulation sample format. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines but still have an attractive overall appearance.
