Morgan Silver Dollars are symbols of American heritage. The US Mint extensively produced them from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921 to serve as the US’ official circulating dollar coin. And in 2021, the US Mint struck a commemorative edition to celebrate the centennial of its last official strike. 

Morgan Dollars are named after their design creator, George T. Morgan. Several branches of the US Mint manufactured Morgan Dollars over the years, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, until 1893, when coinage operations in this last facility ceased.

Those coins minted with the “O” mint mark were issued in the New Orleans Mint.

The Design

The obverse features Lady Liberty’s left-profile bust wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance accompany the image.

The reverse displays the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” complete the design.

An NGC MS-63 Coin

NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company appraises and grades coins independently from sovereign mints. It uses the Sheldon Grading Scale to rank coins from 1 to 70.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business circulation sample format. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines but still have an attractive overall appearance.
