1881-S NGC MS-66 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin
Morgan Silver Dollars are among the most collected American coins worldwide. The US Mint produced them from 1878 to 1904 and once more in 1921 for widespread circulation, and they became extremely popular silver coins.
The US Mint produced Morgan Dollars in various branches, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, until 1893, when coinage operations in this last facility ceased.
The coins bearing the “S” mint mark indicate they were issued in the San Francisco Mint.

The Design
Morgan dollars were named after their design creator, the US Mint Chief Engraved George T. Morgan.
The obverse features Lady Liberty in a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara bearing the inscription “LIBERTY.”
It also displays the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.
The reverse illustrates the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it.
It also contains the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” inscribed above the eagle’s head, the “S” mint mark from the San Francisco branch appears beneath the Eagle, and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” encircle the entire design.
An NGC MS-66 Coin
NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company is an independent third-party service that uses the Sheldon Grading Scale to appraise and grade coins according to their condition. The scale ranks coins from 1 to 70.
MS stands for mint state. It refers to a coin struck in the same format as a business circulation coin that remained uncirculated. Grade 66 indicates the coin may have contact marks and signs of wear and tear, but it is above average in quality of strike and preserved original mint luster.
