The US Mint produced Morgan Silver Dollars as the official dollar coin in the US from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. Due to their historical relevance and alluring artistry, designed by George T. Morgan, the US Mint issued a commemorative edition in 2021 to celebrate the centennial of its last official coinage.

The US Mint produced Morgan Dollars in various branches, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, until 1893, when coinage operations in this last facility ceased.

These coins, in particular, carry the “S” mint mark because they were issued in San Francisco.

The Design

Lady Liberty’s portrayal from the obverse is a left-profile bust in which she wears a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara bearing the inscription “LIBERTY.” 

The image is supplemented by the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

The Bald Eagle from the reverse was depicted with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. 

It also displays the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” inscribed above the eagle’s head, the “S” mint mark from the San Francisco branch appears beneath the Eagle, and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” encircle the entire design.

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) works independently from sovereign mints, appraising and grading coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.
