1881-S NGC MS-64 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin

The US Mint issued Morgan Silver Dollars to serve as the official dollar coin in the US from 1878 to 1904 and once more in 1921. Because of their historical significance and exquisite design, created by George T. Morgan, the US Mint crafted a commemorative strike in 2021 to mark the centennial of its last official coinage.

Over the years, the US Mint used different branches to produce Morgan Dollars, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, until 1893, when coinage operations in this last facility ceased.

These coins, in particular, carry the “S” mint mark, identifying the San Francisco branch which issued them.

Today, SD Bullion has 1881-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins in stock, graded and certified by NGC as MS-64 coins.

Coin Highlights

  • Evaluated, encapsulated, and graded as MS-65 coin by NGC;
  • Contains .7734 oz of silver;
  • Produced by the US Mint;
  • Issued in San Francisco and carries the “S” mint mark;
  • Holds legal tender status and a USD 1 face value;
  • The obverse design features Lady Liberty;
  • The reverse showcases the Bald Eagle.

The Design

Lady Liberty, depicted on the obverse, looks to the left and wears a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara bearing the inscription “LIBERTY.”

The image also features the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

The reverse displays the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it.

It includes the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” inscribed above the eagle’s head, the “S” mint mark from the San Francisco branch appears beneath the Eagle, and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” encircle the entire design.

An NGC MS-64 coin

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company) appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

An MS-64 coin means that the analyzed coin has the same format as a business coin that has average luster, noticeable, light scuff marks, or defects but with attractive overall quality.
