1880-S PCGS MS-64 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin

Morgan Silver Dollars were the official dollar coin in the US from 1878 to 1904 and once more in 1921. They are treasured for their historical significance and exquisite design, which was created by George T. Morgan and named after him.

Over the years, the US Mint manufactured Morgan Silver Dollars through different branches, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, until 1893, when coinage operations in this last facility ceased.

These coins, in particular, carry the “S” mint mark, identifying the San Francisco branch which issued them.

Today, SD Bullion offers 1880-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins, graded and certified by PCGS as MS-64 coins.

Coin Highlights

  • Evaluated, encapsulated, and graded as MS-64 coin by PCGS;

  • Contains .7734 oz of silver;

  • Produced by the US Mint;

  • Issued in San Francisco and carries the “S” mint mark;

  • Holds legal tender status and a USD 1 face value;

  • Morgan’s obverse design features Lady Liberty;

  • The reverse showcases the Bald Eagle.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty looks left and wears a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara bearing the inscription “LIBERTY.”

Her bust is surrounded by the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

The reverse features the Bald Eagle with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons, and laurels surrounding it.

The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is inscribed above the eagle’s head, the “S” mint mark from the San Francisco branch appears beneath the Eagle, and the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” encircle the entire design.

A PCGS MS-64 Coin

PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service appraises and grades coins based on the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

MS stands for Mint State, referring to coins issued in the same format as a business circulation coin. 64 is the grade given to coins with average luster, noticeable, light scuff marks, or defects but with attractive overall quality.
