1879-S PCGS MS-65 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin
Morgan Silver Dollars served as the official U.S. dollar coin from 1878 to 1904, with a one-year revival in 1921.
Named after their designer, George T. Morgan, these coins were minted at several facilities, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, until the last one ceased operations in 1893.
The specific coins in question feature the “S” mint mark, signifying production at the San Francisco Mint.
Today, SD Bullion presents 1879-S Morgan Silver Dollar Coins, graded and certified by PCGS as MS-65 coins.

The Design
The obverse displays a left-facing bust of Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton bolls and a tiara inscribed with “LIBERTY.”
Surrounding the portrait are the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars symbolizing the Original Thirteen Colonies, and the coin’s year of issue.
On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted with wings spread wide, clutching arrows and olive branches in its talons, framed by a laurel wreath.
The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “ONE DOLLAR” encircle the design, while “IN GOD WE TRUST” appears above the eagle’s head.
The “S” mint mark, indicating the San Francisco Mint, is just below the eagle.
A PCGS MS-65 coin
PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.
An MS-65 coin means that the analyzed coin has the same format as a business coin that still displays high-quality luster despite its aged mintage. Minor contact marks and scatters may be noticeable, but the coin has an overall quality above the average.
