1879-S NGC MS-63 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin 

The US Mint first released Morgan Silver Dollars in 1878, containing .7734 oz of 90% silver as the circulating USD 1 coin.

Morgan Dollars are named after their design creator, Chief Engraver George T. Morgan’s design. The US Mint manufactured Morgan Dollars until 1904, reintroduced them in 1921, and after a century, it struck a commemorative edition in 2021.

These coins were minted at several branches, including Philadelphia, New Orleans, Denver, San Francisco, and Carson City, which stopped minting in 1893. 

Those with the "S" mint mark were issued at the San Francisco Mint.

The Design

On the obverse, Lady Liberty wears a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.” 

Her effigy includes the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of issuance.

On the reverse, the Bald Eagle has outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. The “S” mint mark from the San Francisco Mint is beneath the laurel wreath.

The image also contains the engravings “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company appraises and grades coins independently from sovereign mints. It uses the Sheldon Grading Scale to rank coins from 1 to 70.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business circulation sample format. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines but still have an attractive overall appearance.
