1879 PCGS MS-63 Morgan Silver Dollar Coin

The US Mint initially issued Morgan Silver Dollars in 1878, each containing .7734 oz of 90% silver and serving as the circulating USD 1 coin.

Named after their designer, Chief Engraver George T. Morgan, these coins were produced until 1904, reissued in 1921, and struck in a commemorative edition in 2021.

Today, SD Bullion offers 1879 Morgan Silver Dollar Coins sealed in PCGS slabs and certified as MS-63 coins.

Coin Highlights

  • Evaluated, encapsulated, and graded as MS-63 coin by PCGS;
  • Contains .7734 oz of silver;
  • Produced by the US Mint;
  • Issued in San Francisco and bears the “S” mint mark;
  • Holds USD 1 denomination and legal tender status;
  • The obverse showcases Lady Liberty in the Phrygian cap;
  • The Bald Eagle is displayed on the reverse.

The Design

The obverse showcases Lady Liberty wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton balls and a tiara inscribed “LIBERTY.”

Her obverse effigy also contains the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” thirteen five-pointed stars representing the Thirteen Original Colonies and the year of issuance.

The reverse features the Bald Eagle displayed with outstretched wings, arrows, and olive branches in its talons and laurels surrounding it. The “S” mint mark from the San Francisco Mint is beneath the laurel wreath.

It includes the engravings “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

A PCGS MS-63 Coin

PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) is internationally recognized for appraising and grading coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale as a parameter. It works apart from sovereign mints, certifying coins from 1 to 70, according to their condition.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin produced in a business circulation sample format. Grade 63 indicates that the coin may present marks and minor visible hairlines but still have an attractive overall appearance.
