1878-2018 1/2 oz Gold NGC PF-70 UCAM Morgan's Eagle Design - Smithsonian Collection

In 2018, to celebrate the 140th anniversary of the Morgan Dollar, the Smithsonian was authorized to issue a special strike on Morgan’s Eagle Design.

These coins, containing 1/2 Troy oz of .999 fine gold, showcase George T. Morgan’s Liberty Head design, which would appear on a legal-tender U.S. Gold Eagle coin.

The original samples, dating back to 1878, that inspired the Smithsonian Collection are extremely rare and have remained isolated in the Connecticut State Library for over a century.

The Design

The design replicates George T. Morgan’s original design with few adaptations.

The obverse features Lady Liberty's bust, inspired by Anna Williams, but with a different Phrygian cap and no cereal wreath. 

The motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” is split and flak the effigy. At the bottom rim, read: “1878-2018.”

The reverse depicts an eagle with spread wings, holding an olive branch in the right talon and three arrows in the left. Accompanying engravings refer to the motto IN “GOD WE TRUST,” “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” and “EAGLE” at the bottom.

An NGC PF-70 coin

NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company), which operates independently of sovereign mints, appraises and certifies coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

The initials PF stand for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes. It exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. Grade 70 is attributed to flawless coins.
