The Silver Eagle Design
The Obverse design was created by the sculptor Adolph Alexander Weinman in 1916 and was first used in the half-dollar piece. It depicts the classical goddess Liberty in movement, and thus became known as the “Walking Liberty”.
The rising sun is visible in the background and the word “Liberty” is above the goddess. It also carries the historic inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the mint year on the bottom.
The Heraldic Eagle on the reverse
The original reverse was designed by John Mercanti and, resembling the Great Seal of the United States, it portrays the heraldic eagle behind a shield. Grasped on its right talon is an olive branch and arrows on the left one. There are thirteen stars above the eagle representing the thirteen colonies. It holds in its beak a banner with the inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM.
Around the eagle, you can read: “United States of America - 1 oz. Fine Silver ~ One Dollar”.
The New Eagle on the reverse
The new 2021 American Silver Eagle reverse design features designer Emily Damtra’s depiction of a bald eagle - America’s national bird - in its natural state, amidst flight, while enveloping an oak branch between its talons, making its way to somewhere of safety, in the moments before landing.
Around the edge of the coin, the inscription reads “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR”. The national motto, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, is located above the weight of the coin.
The American Silver Eagle Series
The American Eagle Coin Program was released by the United States Mint in 1986 with silver and gold eagle coins for investors. After the success of the program, it has been expanded to include platinum and palladium coins. The US Mint also produces proof and uncirculated coins for collectors. The program is currently regarded as one of the best coin investments in the world.
Redesigned American Eagle Silver Reverse
The U.S. Mint has announced a redesign for the reverse of the 1 oz. American Silver Eagle to include anti-counterfeiting measures.
The new design is expected to go on sale sometime in the summer of 2021. It will depict the national bird in a natural state, flying with an oak branch. It was designed by Emily Damstra who wanted to show the American Eagle coming in for a landing as if adding a branch to its nest.
In addition to capturing the American bald eagle in its natural state, the design aims to depict the caring, cooperation, and protection of the eagle.
