The Silver Eagle Coin Design

The Obverse design was created by the sculptor Adolph Alexander Weinman in 1916 and was first used in the half-dollar piece. It depicts the classical goddess Liberty in movement, and thus became known as the “Walking Liberty”. 

The rising sun is visible in the background and the word “Liberty” is above the goddess. It also carries the historic inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST” and the mint year on the bottom.

The Heraldic Eagle on the reverse

The original reverse was designed by John Mercanti and, resembling the Great Seal of the United States, it portrays the heraldic eagle behind a shield. Grasped on its right talon is an olive branch and arrows on the left one. There are thirteen stars above the eagle representing the thirteen colonies. It holds in its beak a banner with the inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM.

Around the eagle, you can read: “United States of America - 1 oz. Fine Silver ~ One Dollar”.

The New Eagle on the reverse

The new 2021 American Silver Eagle reverse design features designer Emily Damtra’s depiction of a bald eagle - America’s national bird - in its natural state, amidst flight, while enveloping an oak branch between its talons, making its way to somewhere of safety, in the moments before landing.

Around the edge of the coin, the inscription reads “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ. FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR”. The national motto, “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, is located above the weight of the coin.
