PCGS MS-61 $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle Gold Coin - Random Year

The Liberty Series of gold coins produced by the US Mint and designed by Christian Gobrecht is an icon in the US coinage.

Liberty Gold Coins bore different face values, including a quarter coin. Liberty Quarter Eagle Coins were circulated in American hands between 1840 and 1907 US as the official $2.50 containing .12094 oz of gold.

An interesting fact is that the remarkable design by Christian Gobrecht remained unchanged for 67 years, making it the longest-lasting design in American coinage history.

At SD Bullion, you can find $2.50 Liberty Quarter Eagle coins of varied mintage years, sealed and graded by PCGS as MS-61 coins.

Coin Highlights

  • Appraised, encapsulated, and graded as MS-61 by PCGS;

  • Produced by the US Mint between 1840 and 1907;

The Design

The obverse portrays Lady Liberty’s bust, wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY.” The stars surrounding her represent the Thirteen Original Colonies, and the year of mintage is engraved at the bottom.

The reverse depicts the Heraldic Eagle with outstretched wings, the national shield on its chest, arrows, and an olive branch on its talons.

The accompanying inscriptions are limited to the nation’s name and the coin’s face value.

A PCGS MS-61 Coin

PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service uses the Sheldon Grading Scale as a parameter to appraise and grade coins from 1 to 70.

An MS-Mint State coin has the same format as a business coin. Grade 61 indicates that the coin’s mint luster may be diminished, with clusters of minor contact marks and noticeable hairlines.
