NGC SP-70 2016-W 1/2 oz Walking Liberty Gold Half Dollar Coin

Three remarkable designs in American coinage history celebrated 100 years in 2016.

Paying tribute to this landmark, the US Mint minted Mercury Dimes, Standing Liberty Quarter Dollars, and Walking Liberty Half Dollar designs in a limited strike of gold bullion coins.

The Walking Liberty Gold Half Dollar was the last coin from the set released by the US Mint in 2016. It weighs half-ounce of 24k gold, and it was issued in a limited edition at the West Point branch and reproduces the original 1916 Walking Liberty design, also used in the American Silver Eagles Coins.

The Design

Adolph A. Weinman depicted Lady Liberty walking toward the sun’s rays, hence its moniker. In the image, Lady Liberty has the American flag draped on her shoulder, oak branches on one arm, and the other arm is stretched in a welcome sign. The word “LIBERTY” arches over her, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” lies on the lower right, along with the “W” mint mark, and the year of issuance is at the bottom rim.

The reverse design features the Bald Eagle perched on the edge of a rock, preparing wings to fly and carrying oak branches on its talons. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is inscribed on top, “‘E PLURIBUS UNUM” on the left, and the description of the coin’s metal content, weight, and face value is beneath the eagle and reads “AU 24K 1/2 OZ,” and “HALF-DOLLAR.”

Mintage

The Centennial of the Mercury Silver Dime, the Standing Liberty Silver Quarter, and the Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar coins was honored by the US Mint through a limited strike of gold coins.

The 1/2 oz Walking Liberty Golf Half Dollar Coin corresponds to the last design struck with 99.99% pure gold coins.

The US Mint issued them through the West Point branch, hence the “W” mint mark on the obverse side, in a limited strike of 65,512 coins.

An NGC SP-70 coin

The NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company, is a third-party service working independently from sovereign mints, evaluating and grading coins based on their condition and the Sheldon Grading Scale. 

According to the scale, SP stands for Specimen, describing a coin that is not a proof coin but is superior to a standard circulation coin. The grade 70 is attributed to perfect coins, which show no signs of flaws.
