NGC/PCGS MS-61 $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin - Random Year
The U.S. Mint produced the $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coin from 1839 to 1908. These coins circulated in American hands during that time as legal tender coins with a USD 5 denomination and 90% pure gold content.
The economic collapse of the 1930s, coupled with rising gold prices, led to a Confiscation Act and the widespread melting of gold coins for their metal content. As a result, $5 Liberty Half Eagle Gold Coins are highly prized for their relative scarcity.
Today, at SD Bullion, you can purchase $5 Liberty Head Half Eagle Gold Coins of varied mint years, graded MS-61 by either NGC or PCGS.

The Design
The design, created by Christian Gobrecht, differs from other gold bullion coins because it was struck in two types: a rare “No Motto” version, released from 1839 to 1865, and the “With Motto” version, issued from 1866 to 1908.
The obverse portrays Lady Liberty in a left-profile bust, wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY.” The image is surrounded by thirteen stars, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies, and has the year of mintage at the bottom rim.
The reverse depicts the Heraldic Eagle, with the national shield on its chest, olive branches, and arrows in its talons. The inscriptions encircling the image read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “FIVE D.”, which refers to the coin’s face value.
Those coins called “With Motto,” produced from 1866 on, included the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” in a banner above the Eagle.
An NGC or PCGS MS-61 Coin
PCGS—Professional Coin Grading Service and NGC—Numismatic Guaranty Company are internationally recognized third-party services that classify coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale. The scale ranks coins from 1 to 70.
For both services, an MS-Mint State coin has the same format as a business coin. Grade 61 indicates that the coin’s mint luster may be diminished, with clusters of minor contact marks and noticeable hairlines.
