The Design
The design is credited to sculptor Bela Lyon Pratt, a student of Augustus Saint-Gaudens.
The obverse features the left-facing bust of a Native American chief wearing a full headdress, surrounded by thirteen five-pointed stars. The word "LIBERTY" arches above the figure, with the year of issuance below.
On the reverse, a Bald Eagle is depicted perched on an arrow wrapped with an olive branch. The eagle is flanked by "E PLURIBUS UNUM" on the left and "IN GOD WE TRUST" on the right, with "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" engraved at the top and the coin’s face value, "2 ½ DOLLARS" at the bottom.
An NGC or PCGS MS-61 Coin
PCGS - Professional Coin Grading Service and the NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company are internationally recognized third-party services that use the Sheldon Grading Scale to classify coins according to their condition at the moment of appraisal within particular grades.
The scale ranks coins from 1 to 70.
An MS-Mint State coin has the same format as a business coin. Grade 61 indicates that the coin’s mint luster may be diminished, with clusters of minor contact marks and noticeable hairlines.
