NGC Gem 1 oz Union George T. Morgan Proof Gold Round
The Union George T. Morgan Proof Gold Round honors Morgan's significant contributions to U.S. coinage history. As one of the most influential designers at the U.S. Mint, Morgan is best known for the Morgan Dollar, a coin that circulated from 1878 to 1904 and briefly in 1921, remaining highly popular in the United States today.
Issued in 2010, this Gold Round contains 1 Troy oz of 99.9% gold. Morgan’s design on the coin was originally part of a 19th-century U.S. Mint plan to produce $50 and $100 proof gold coins, named the Half Union and Union. However, none of these coins were ever minted.
At SD Bullion, you can find 1 oz Union George T. Morgan Proof Gold Rounds, with a proposed design dating back to 1876, certified by NGC as a GEM Proof round.

The Design
The obverse shows Lady Liberty seated on a rock, wearing a cap, with wheat stalks beside her. She holds a scepter in one hand and an olive branch in the other, with a sailing ship depicted in the background. "LIBERTY" is engraved at the top, and "1876," the year of Morgan's design, is inscribed at the bottom.
The reverse features a Bald Eagle with its wings spread, clutching a shield and arrows. The phrases “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” and “IN GOLD WE TRUST” are inscribed above. On the bottom, some contain the words "ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS" while others do not. What is received will be based on currently available inventory at the time of purchase.
NGC GEM Proof Certification
NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70, apart from sovereign mints.
According to NGC, GEM Proof equals Proof-65.
“Proof” refers to samples with an exceptional background luster. 65 corresponds to a high-quality mirror surface with a few noticeable hairline scratches.
A Gold Round
There are a number of Smithsonian Gold products available in the market. These were created for historical purposes and occasionally featured designs that contained the words "ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS" on the rounds. Whether or not this round contains that text, these do not contain any numismatic value. The text is strictly present for educational and historical purposes.
