The Design
Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design displayed in the Silver Eagle coin is the one rescued from the 1917 Half Dollar coin.
In the design, Lady Liberty walks toward the sun's rays. She has the American flag draped on her shoulder, oak branches on her left arm, and a stretched right arm in a welcome sign. The word “LIBERTY” is engraved on top, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is aside, and the year of mintage is at the bottom.
John Mercanti’s reverse design showcases the heraldic eagle with spread wings and a star-spangled shield on its chest. The eagle carries the “E Pluribus Unum” banner, meaning “out of many, one,” on its beak and arrows and olive branches on its talons. The thirteen stars above the eagle represent the original colonies.
The whole image is surrounded by “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”
An NGC MS/PF-70 Early Release Coin
The NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company is a renowned third-party service that appraises and grades coins, independently of sovereign mints, using the Sheldon Grading Scale. The scale ranges from 1 to 70, and coins are ranked according to their condition.
For the NGC, an “Early Release” is a coin manufactured within the first 30 days of the US Mint production. PF refers to proof coins, while MS stands for Mint State, which means the coin has a popular circulation format that remained uncirculated. Grade 70 is the highest grade on the Sheldon Scale, attributed to a flawless coin.
