Buy $5 Face - 90% US Silver Dimes (Random Design)
After the passage of the Coinage Act of 1965, the United States Mint stopped using any kind of silver alloy in the making of dimes due to the high cost of production. Since then, 10-cent coins are minted with copper and nickel, but these 90% silver dimes still retain their face value and, most importantly, their precious metal content (in other words, their intrinsic value).
Sometimes called junk silver, these 90% silver coins are far from being junk and are a great way to amass tangible assets and diversify your investment portfolio, while, at the same time, collecting a part of American history.
What Coins are Included
The 90% Silver Dimes Random Design can include Barber Dimes (minted from 1892 to 1916), Mercury Dimes (minted from 1916 to 1945), and Roosevelt Dimes (minted from 1946 to 1964) in circulated condition from a range of mint years (dates will vary according to the stock at hand).
Barber Dimes
Barber Dimes are named after their designer, Charles E. Barber, and replaced the Seated Liberty design. On the obverse, they portray the Lady Liberty profile facing right and wearing a pileus, a crown of olive branches. The reverse is inscribed with the words ONE DIME around olive branches.
Mercury Dimes
Mercury Dimes were designed by famous sculptor Adolph Weinman and also depict Lady Liberty on the obverse, this time facing left with the inscription IN GOD WE TRUST and the word LIBERTY all around it. The goddess is wearing a winged phrygian cap, thus this dime is sometimes referred to as the Winged Liberty Head. The reverse features a fasces with olive branches, symbolizing America’s readiness for war, but still a desire for peace, and the inscription E PLURIBUS UNUM.
Roosevelt Dimes
The Roosevelt Dime was authorized by Congress to honour 32nd U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt soon after his death in 1945. The coin debuted in the market the following year and is still the current dime design. It is engraved on the obverse with the aforementioned political figure, retaining the inscriptions LIBERTY on the top left and IN GOD WE TRUST below the portrait. The reverse shows a lit torch in between branches of oak and olive. It is also inscribed with the saying E PLURIBUS UNUM.
How much Silver do the 90% US Silver Dimes have
Each pre-1965 dime contains approximately .0715 troy ounces of pure silver. These rolls contain 50 US silver dimes, adding up to $5 face value and are approximately 3.575 troy ounces of silver content. Customers will receive $5 Face Value of 90% Silver Dimes upon purchase, but weights for these dimes may vary due to wear and circulation.
