The 1916 Mercury Dime 24K Gold Coin Design
The obverse features a left-facing portrait of Liberty wearing a winged cap, an enduring symbol of freedom of thought and intellectual liberty. Surrounding inscriptions include “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the date “1916.”
To honor the Nation’s Semiquincentennial celebration, the design also incorporates a special Liberty Bell privy mark bearing the number “250.”
On the reverse, the coin displays a fasces, representing unity and collective strength. Alongside it are a battle axe and olive branch, symbolizing both America’s preparedness for defense and its commitment to peace. The reverse inscriptions read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and “ONE DIME.” It also features the “W” mintmark from the West Point branch.
The 1916 Mercury Dime Silver Medal Inspired Design
Commonly referred to as the Winged Liberty Dime, the coin's obverse showcases a sweeping design that continues onto the reverse, paying tribute to its original circulation from 1916 to 1945.
The artwork reflects a period in American history marked by social change, economic hardship, and global conflict. As the United States experienced two world wars during these decades, Liberty is portrayed in protective and determined stances, symbolizing resilience and strength.
The design flows seamlessly onto the reverse, where rays extending from Liberty’s sword represent hope emerging after times of conflict.
Additional elements reference major historical events of the era, including Hooverville shacks symbolizing the Great Depression and swirling background waves representing the Dust Bowl. The inscription “1916–1945” commemorates the years tied to the original Mercury Dime’s circulation.
