The American Liberty Gold Coin is the first American high-relief 24-karat gold coin. It was struck by the US mint in 2015, bearing the highest face value ever given to a U.S. gold coin. 

The design, created by artists from the US Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program, features a contemporary version of Lady Liberty and the bald eagle, enhanced by a high-relief effect that gives the coin remarkable depth and fine detail. 

These coins, in particular, were struck at the West Point Mint, bearing the “W” mint mark, and were purchased from the U.S. Mint before their official release, then certified by PCGS.

The Design

On the obverse, a youthful Lady Liberty, designed by Justin Kunz, is crowned with a wreath, holding a torch in one hand and a pole bearing the American flag in the other.

The design also contains the engravings “LIBERTY, ” the year of issue, and the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST.”

The reverse was designed by Paul C. Balan. It depicts a Bald Eagle in mid-flight, clutching an olive branch in its talons.

It is engraved with “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” the West Point “W” mint mark, “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD,” and “ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS.”

Thanks to its high-relief strike, the design rises with striking height and depth, extending beyond the coin’s rim.

A PCGS PR-70 “Advanced Releases” Coin 

PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) appraises and grades coins using the Sheldon Grading Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

According to PCGS, “Advanced Releases” coins refer to those purchased before release at their original mint.

PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes that exhibits mirror-like surfaces contrasting with frosted design elements. 70 is the highest grade on the scale attributed to flawless coins.
