The Design

The designs were crafted by Joseph Menna, a former DC artist and now the Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, whose initials appear on the artwork.

On the obverse, Superman™ is flying high above the farm where his adoptive family raised him. The glowing sun illuminates the surrounding fields, representing the supportive upbringing of his youth and the energy that fuels his remarkable abilities.

It is engraved with the word “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the year of issuance, and the West Point “W” mint mark.

The reverse portrays a young Clark Kent and his adoptive father, Jonathan Kent, on their family farm. Clark looks skyward at a passing plane, filled with wonder, as Jonathan observes him with a calm pride.

The engravings read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, “$50, “1/2 OZ.” “.9999 FINE GOLD,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
