This groundbreaking lineup honors iconic characters whose stories embody core national values. The debut release showcases Superman™ and his civilian identity, Clark Kent™, timeless figures recognized for their courage, resilience, and unwavering sense of justice.

This coin, in particular, is a proof sample from the West Point Mint, purchased on the first official release day, and submitted to NGC for grading.

The Design

The designs were crafted by Joseph Menna, a former DC artist and now the Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, whose initials appear on the artwork.

The obverse presents a striking portrayal of Superman™ flying high above the farm where his adoptive family raised him. The glowing sun illuminates the surrounding fields, representing the supportive upbringing of his youth and the energy that fuels his remarkable abilities.

It is inscribed with the word “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the year of issuance, and the West Point “W” mint mark.

The reverse depicts a young Clark Kent alongside his adoptive father, Jonathan Kent, on their family farm. Clark looks skyward at a passing plane, filled with wonder, as Jonathan observes him with a calm pride.

The accompanying engravings read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, “$50, “1/2 OZ.” “.9999 FINE GOLD,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

An NGC PF-70 First Day of Issue Coin 

Third-party services, such as NGC (Numismatic Guaranty Company), use the Sheldon Scale to appraise and grade coins.

NGC considers “First Day of Issue” a coin purchased from its original mint on the first day of its release and submitted to NGC appraisal.

The initials "PF" stand for "Proof Coin," indicating a coin produced for collection purposes. It exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. Grade 70 is the highest and is attributed to coins with no visible marks.
