2024-W PCGS PR-70 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof Coin

The first American Silver Eagle introduced in the bullion market by the US Mint was a bullion coin weighing 1 Troy oz of 99.9% fine silver.

The US Mint presented the Proof Silver Eagle in the same year. It has equal weight, metal content, and purity settings but a “W” mint mark, referring to the coins issued in the West Point branch.

The Design

The Silver Eagle obverse design reproduces Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design from the 1917 Half-Dollar coin.

Lady Liberty, the national feminine personification, has the American flag draped on her shoulder and walks towards the sun, carrying oak branches. Her stretched right arm indicates a welcome sign.

It also features the word “LIBERTY,” the year of issuance, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the “W’ West Point mint mark.

Emily Damstra’s reverse design displays a Bald Eagle perched on a branch with open wings, accompanied by the engravings “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “1 OZ,” and “FINE SILVER,” informing the coin’s face value, weight, and metal content, and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
