2024-W NGC MS-70 FDOI 1 oz American Silver Eagle Burnished Coin - Exclusive West Point Label

American Silver Eagle coins feature designs that embody patriotism and features iconic American symbols. The designs are authored by Adolph A. Weinman, whose Walking Liberty originally appeared on the 1917 Half-Dollar coin, and by Emily Damstra, whose Bald Eagle on the reverse, introduced in 2021, was created to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the American Eagles Program.

These coins, in particular, are burnished versions struck in the West Point branch and carry the “W” mint mark. The blanks used in their making underwent a special treatment process called burnishing, which cleans them from undesired oxides, resulting in a matte finish with more vivid design details.

Today, SD Bullion offers 2024-W 1 oz Burnished American Silver Eagles, taken among those available for purchase in the US Mint on day #1, graded as MS-70 coins and sealed in NGC slabs with the Exclusive West Point Label

It also features the word “LIBERTY,” the year of issuance, the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the “W’ West Point mint mark beneath it.

On the reverse, the Bald Eagle is showcased perched on a branch with open wings. The design is surrounded by “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “1 OZ,” “FINE SILVER,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”

Burnished Coins

A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than Proof American Eagles.

An NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue Coin

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company uses the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70, to grade coins submitted to its appraisal.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin crafted in the format of a business circulation coin. The scale attributes 70, the highest grade, to flawless coins.

NGC considers “First Day of Issue” a coin purchased from the US Mint on the very first day it was made publicly available.
