American Silver Eagles, along with Gold Eagle coins, were first struck in 1986. Therefore, 2024 marks the 39th mintage of the Silver Eagles. They bear a 1-dollar face value and 1 Troy oz of 99.9% fine silver.

These coins, in particular, are burnished versions, struck in the West Point branch, and carry the “W” mint mark. The blanks used in their minting underwent a special treatment process called burnishing, which cleans them from undesired oxides, resulting in a matte finish with more vivid design details.

The Design

The obverse is a reproduction of Adolph A. Weinman’s Walking Liberty design, first used by the US Mint in the 1917 Half Dollar coin. 

It features Lady Liberty, with the American flag draped on her shoulder, walking towards the sun, carrying oak branches, and welcoming new inhabitants.

The word “LIBERTY” arches over the image, the year of issuance lies on the bottom, the “IN GOD WE TRUST” is on the lower right, and the “W’ West Point mint mark is beneath it.

The reverse design showcases the Bald Eagle perched on a branch with open wings. The engravings encircle the whole image and read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DOLLAR,” “1 OZ,” and “FINE SILVER,” added by the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.” 

Burnished Coins

A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than Proof American Eagles.

An NGC MS-70 First Day of Issue Coin 

NGC - Numismatic Guaranty Company and other renowned third-party grading services certify coins submitted to their appreciation using the Sheldon Scale, which ranks coins from 1 to 70.

MS stands for Mint State, indicating a coin crafted in the format of a business circulation coin. Since it has never been in circulation, the coin has no sign of wear, tear, or scratching, which grants it a 70 grade.

NGC considers “First Day of Issue” a coin purchased from the US Mint on the very first day it was made publicly available.
