The Mexican Libertad Design

The series design pays tribute to the Centenario of the Mexican Independence. Therefore, both sides of the coin feature national symbols.

The obverse showcases the Coat of Arms of Mexico. The heavier coins in the series, starting with the one-ounce piece, feature eleven versions of this seal, with the current one centralized and encircled by the words “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.”

As a pattern, all versions depict an Eagle in battle position, perched on a pear cactus eating a rattlesnake, defending the nation against foreign domination.

Smaller coins, starting with the half-once, display only the current Coat of Arms.

The reverse exhibits the same image, whatever size. It portrays the Angel of Victory. The angel is a feminine guise of the nation with arms and wings open, with two folk mountains, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl, in the background. 

The Winged Victory is also a 17-foot monument located in Mexico City. 

Further engravings describe their corresponding coin’s weight, metal content, fineness, and year of issuance. The “M” on the right identifies the Mexican Mint.

The Libertad Series

The Mexican Libertad Series is one of the oldest coin series in the Americas. Its debut dates back to 1982, when only a few coins around the globe, like the Canadian Maple Leaf and South African Krugerrand coins, were available for private investment.

It is a comprehensive collection of gold and silver coins ranging from the tiny 1/20 oz to the heavy Kilo Coin, in bullion, proof, and reverse-proof finishes.
