Introduced in 1982, Mexican Silver Libertads is one of the oldest coin programs worldwide.

The Design

The heavier coins of the Silver Libertad Series, starting with the 1 oz coin, display eleven versions of the Mexican Coat of Arms on the obverse. The current seal is in the center, surrounded by the ten previous seals. As a pattern, they all feature an Eagle in battle position, defending the nation against foreign domination. The central symbol has the Eagle perched on a pear cactus eating a rattlesnake and is encircled by “ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS.”

The reverse design features the Angel of Victory, the Monument of Freedom located in Mexico City. The angel is a feminine figure of the nation with arms and wings open, with two folk mountains, Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl, in the background. The inscriptions that complete the image refer to the coin’s weight, metal content, fineness, and year of issuance. They read “1 ONZA PLATA PURA 2023 LEY .999.” And the “M” on the right identifies the Mexican Mint.
