The 2018 Silver Eagle Design
American Silver Eagle coins carry iconic designs, like most of the American bullion coin series. This one is signed by two artists: Adolph A. Weinman, responsible for the obverse and John M. Mercanti, who idealized the reverse. These designs are considered some of the most beautiful ones among the American coins.
Silver Eagle Obverse Design
The obverse design originally comes from the Walking Lady Half Dollar, in circulation between 1916 to 1947. On the Silver Eagle coins, Lady Liberty is enveloped in the American flag, walking forward with the sunrise on the horizon behind. She carries branches of laurel and oak on the left arm, while her right arm is open in a welcoming sign. The words “Liberty” are on top, and “In God we trust”, on the right face of the design.
Silver Eagle Reverse Design
The reverse displays the heraldic eagle, behind the national shield. The eagle carries in its beak a banner with the words “E pluribus unum”. In its talons, there is an olive branch and a set of arrows, as a sign of peace and protection. Thirteen stars representing the original colonies are featured over the eagle. On the coin’s outer rim, we can read: “United States of America” on the top, “1 oz fine silver” and “one dollar” on the bottom.
The Silver Eagles Mintage
The American government launched the Silver Eagle program as an attempt to make good use of the national defense stockpile and to make silver bullion circulate in the market as investment-grade coins.
Following the first release in 1986, the American Silver Eagle coins would quickly become one of the most popular silver bullion coins in the world. The design makes them elegant and provides semi-numismatic value, but the metal content of 1 oz fine silver makes them desirable for investment as well. Despite their 1 dollar face value, they are worth at least their weight in silver plus a premium.
The American Silver Eagles are an annual program. In 2018, the US Mint released 15,700,000 of the Silver Eagles bullion coins. In addition, they produced 381,810 Proof Silver Eagles that year and 138,966 Burnished Uncirculated Silver Eagles.
