The US Mint introduced the US Silver Eagle to the numismatic world in 1986 through the American Eagle Program as the US  official silver bullion coin.

Each American Silver Eagle coin is minted with precision, combining aesthetic beauty and guaranteed metal content. It contains 1 Troy oz of 99.9% fine silver in bullion, proof, and burnished versions.

These US Silver Eagles, in particular, are Burnished coins minted at the West Point branch and bear the “W” mint mark. The blanks used in their making underwent a special treatment process called burnishing, which cleans them from undesired oxides, resulting in a matte finish with more vivid design details.

The Design

Lady Liberty, featured on the obverse, is folded in the American flag as she walks with an outstretched arm and carrying oak branches in the other.

The word “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the “W” West Point mint mark, and the year of issuance accompany the image.

On the reverse, the Heraldic Eagle is beneath 13 stars, representing the Thirteen Original Colonies. The Eagle has the National Shield on its chest, arrows and olive branches in its talons, and a banner with "E PLURIBUS UNUM" in its beak. 

Further engravings reading "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR" refer to face value, weight, metal content, and purity.

Burnished Coins

A Burnished American Eagle Coin results from a “burnishing” process, hence the name. It essentially means that the blanks are cleaned from all oxides formed during the annealing and rimming process. This way, burnished coins get a satin look and a smooth surface but less reflective luster than the Proof version.
