The Design

The obverse portrays Liberty in left-profile wearing a winged pileus cap, symbolizing freedom of thought. Because the winged cap resembles Mercury, the Roman messenger god, the design became popularly known as the “Mercury Dime.” Inscriptions include “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” the year of issuance, and the “W” mint mark.

The reverse displays a fasces—bundled rods bound around an axe—representing unity and strength, wrapped with olive branches to signify peace. The engravings read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “ONE DIME,” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” along with “AU 24K 1/10 OZ,” denoting the coin’s weight and purity.
