US Silver Eagles premiered the American Eagle Program in 1986. They are the official silver coin in the US and are produced in bullion, burnished, and proof versions. 

Celebrating the series' 30th anniversary in 2016, the US Mint prompted the first-ever use of edge lettering on US Silver Eagles. Only these 2016 Proof American Silver Eagle coins have the unique, one-time issue of edge lettering that reads “30th Anniversary.”

The Design

The reverse depicts the Bald Eagle, which carries the national seal on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. The thirteen stars atop represent the Thirteen Colonies.

Engravings informing face value, weight, metal content, and purity description read “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR.”

The obverse showcases Lady Liberty, who is enveloped in the American flag and holds oak and laurel branches in her arm. The words “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of issuance are also engraved.

The commemorative lettering corresponds to “30TH ANNIVERSARY,” easily seen next to the coin’s year of issuance. 

A PCGS PR-69 Coin 

The Sheldon Grading Scale ranges from 1 to 70 and is used as a parameter for third-party services, like PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service), to appraise and grade coins.

According to the scale, PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
