The 2016 Silver Eagle Design
Lady Liberty is a symbol of freedom and enlightenment. Her first appearance of US coinage came right on the first Large Cent the US Mint ever released for circulation: the Flowing Hair Chain large cent. Ever since then she has featured in different coins with different designs, representing a variety of cultural aspects from America. Another national symbol featured on the Silver Eagles is the bald eagle, a treasure of American fauna.
Silver Eagle Obverse Design
The obverse of the Silver Eagle portrays the emblematic Walking Liberty design, by Adolph A. Weinman. Originally, the depiction featured on the Half Dollar coin, in circulation from 1916 to 1947. As the name suggests, Lady Liberty walks with a rising sun on Her back and her gowns blowing in the wind. On her left arm, She carries branches of oak and laurel. Her right arm is stretched forward. On top of the design is the word “LIBERTY” and the mint year is engraved on the bottom of the outer rim. The motto “IN GOD WE TRUST” is on the right-face of the image.
Silver Eagle Reverse Design
The 2016 American Silver Eagle displays the heraldic eagle on the reverse, from the presidential seal. The eagle has its wings wide open with a shield and thirteen five-pointed stars above its head, representing the Original Colonies. On its beak it holds a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, while the talons grasp olive branches and arrows, representing America’s desire for peace, but constant readiness for war. Surrounding the bird are the inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA 1 OZ. FINE SILVER ~ ONE DOLLAR”.
2016 Silver Eagles Mintage
The US Mint released 37,701,500 American Eagle silver bullion coins in 2016 celebrating the 30th anniversary of the program. Most coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint, but it is now known that some bullion Silver Eagles were also produced at the Philadelphia and West Point branches. They contain 1 troy ounce of .999 fine silver content, a diameter of 40.6 mm (1.598 inches) and 2.98 mm (0.117 inches) thick, with reeded edges.
Proof and uncirculated versions have a plain edge with “30th Anniversary” incused. They also contain the “W” mint mark from the West Point Mint.
