The Royal Canadian Mint introduces its Prehistoric Animal series by showcasing the Woolly Mammoth

The Woolly Mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) remains a symbol of the Ice Age and continues to captivate imaginations worldwide. Resembling modern elephants, the woolly mammoth had distinctive qualities that helped in its frigid environment, including smaller ears and a shorter tail to conserve heat, a thick coat of fur, and a prominent fat hump for energy storage.

The coins contain 1 Troy oz of 99.99% pure silver and a proof finish that enhances the design.

The Design

The obverse displays Susan Blunt’s effigy of an elegant Queen Elizabeth II. The artist’s initials are discreetly on the bottom of Her Majesty’s right-profile bust. 

Her Majesty’s bust is surrounded by the inscriptions “ELIZABETH II, “CANADA,” and “D.G.REGINA,” which means “By the Grace of God, Queen” in Latin.

The reverse design showcases a Woolly Mammoth with its trunks on the air and huge tusks. The inscriptions that encircle the image correspond to face value, issuance, fineness, metal content, and weight through: “20 DOLLARS 2014” on top, “9999 FINE SILVER 1 OZ ARGENT PUR 9999.”
