2012 PCGS PR-69 1 oz American Silver Eagle Proof Coin

Proof Silver Eagles were introduced in the American Eagles Program in 1986, along with the regular bullion version of the coin.

Proof Silver Eagles contain one-ounce coins of 99.9% fine silver, a USD1 denomination, legal tender status, and showcase emblematic designs starring Lady Liberty and the Heraldic Eagle. However, they differ from the bullion version in appearance because Proof Eagles exhibit a distinctive mirror-like luster.

The Design

The obverse reproduces the 1917 Half-Dollar Coin, designed by Weinman, in which Lady Liberty walks towards the sun, folded in the American flag.

She welcomes the new immigrants with the oak and laurel branches she holds. The word “LIBERTY,” the motto “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and the year of mintage complete the image.

John Mercanti’s reverse design showcases the Heraldic Eagle. The image starts with thirteen stars over the eagle’s head, representing the original Thirteen Colonies. The Eagle carries the American Great Seal on its chest, arrows and olive branches on its talons, and a banner with the inscription “E PLURIBUS UNUM” on its beak. 

The inscriptions “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ FINE SILVER,” and “ONE DOLLAR” refer to the coin’s face value, weight, metal content, and purity.

Because it is a proof coin, its surfaces exhibit a mirror-like luster, which contrasts with the design’s frosted image.

A PCGS PR-69 Coin 

PCGS, which stands for Professional Coin Grading Service, is a renowned third-party service that evaluates and grades coins using the Sheldon Scale, which ranges from 1 to 70.

According to the scale, PR stands for Proof Coin, indicating a coin produced for collection purposes, which exhibits mirror-like surfaces in contrast with frosted design elements. 69 is the grade attributed to coins whose flaws are almost invisible.
